Game Boy

Power Issues

Aside from dead batteries, these are the most common issues that keep all Game Boys from powering on. Troubleshooting Guide

Dirty or damaged power switch

The most effective method to clean the power switch is to disassemble the switch and ensure everything is clean. Remove all the oxidation and carbon buildup from the inside-out. Opening the switch is the most reliable and best long term solution. Other methods may still help, but should be considered a temporary fix. CGB power switches have a tricky latch when opening up the shield. [Video] Cleaning the power switch is the same method as AGB. [Video]

Aftermarket Replacement Power Switch. This could be an alternative to an actual proper cleaning, when the power switch is corroded beyond repair. Moderate soldering skill required. Video Guide

Helder’s Replacement

Burnt Fuses

There are two fuses F1 and F2 on the system of the same value. F1 is the main system fuse, F2 is a protection fuse from the DC jack. Please refer to the Replacement Parts Sheet.

Corroded DC Jack

Like other consoles this may prevent a the console from powering on. Check continuity between Pin 2 and 3 of the DC jack P4. Pins are numbered on the button side of the console. Poor continuity or high resistance is a sign of a corroded DC jack. These can be desoldered and cleaned. Open circuit on these pins disconnects the battery circuit and switched to DC power only. Replacements are available on AliExpress.

Audio Issues

Corrosion in the physical switch in the headphone jack is a common issue. Check continuity between Pin 4 and 5 of the headphone jack. Pins are numbered on the button side of the console. Poor continuity or high resistance is a sign of a corroded DC jack. Thse can be desoldered to be cleaned. Open circuit on these pin mutes the speaker.

Dead speakers can be replaced as there are OEM-fit aftermarket replacements. For Game Boy Colors, BennVenn explains that speakers that go bad are usually a sign that the capacitors should be changed.

Replacement speakers are available from FunnyPlaying and Cloud Game Store. FunnyPlaying speakers are clear. Cloud Game Store speakers are available in multiple colors.

FunnyPlaying also sold on RetroModding, Retro Game Repair Shop, Zedlabz.

Cloud Game Store also sold on Retro Game Repair Shop.

Replacement Capacitors. Video Guide

Replacement capacitors can also be ordered in bulk. Specs are available in the Replacement Parts Sheet

Corrosion or other liquid damage when neither the jack nor the speaker is bad. Corrosion in the headphone jack area is common and this can cause a broken connection between the headphone jack and the rest of the system. This will manifest in a perfectly working switch when tested with a multimeter but the console will still not work properly. Diagnosis and repair must be done trace by trace by checking both sides of the PCB simultaneously. Please refer to the Board Scans.

50 Best Game Boy Color (GBC) Games Of All Time

The top 50 GBC games, as ranked by you

Image: Damien McFerran / Nintendo LifeRemember, several of these Game Boy Color titles are playable on Switch. Enjoy!

It was 1996 in Japan and 1998 in North America (and a year later in Europe) when the ageing Game Boy got an unexpected shot in the arm thanks to a little game named Pokémon. Nintendo's granddaddy of handheld gaming suddenly had a new lease on life, but in the West the release of the game was followed just weeks later by the arrival of a new console — the Game Boy Color — and it was on that wonderful system that many of us caught our very first Pocket Monster.

A colour update to the original DMG-001 — which had previously been revised in the smaller form of Game Boy Pocket — was a long time coming, but after nine years Game Boy Color finally gave handheld Nintendo gamers the proper upgrade they'd been waiting for.

GBC launched, appropriately, in a range of eye-catching colours and was fully backwards compatible with the existing Game Boy library. Many dual 'black cart' games would also play perfectly well on the original monochrome console, although the sexier Color-exclusive games came on clear cartridges which let you glimpse the board inside. The GBC soon built up its own great software library before the Game Boy Advance came along in 2001. Three years is a relatively short life span, especially compared to its predecessor, but we're big fans of this gorgeous system and its impressive, oft-forgotten library.

Hang on, we gave this a 7?? Staff meeting! — Image: Gavin Lane / Nintendo Life

We've previously assembled Top 50 rankings for every other Nintendo console, each and every one based on User Ratings submitted by readers, and this list of the Best Game Boy Color games ever is the last to go live. Thank you all for contributing, to this list and all the others.

Remember, though, that just like the others, this ranking is not set in stone. The list will continue to evolve automatically based on user scores submitted to the Nintendo Life game database. If you missed out on 'voting', you can still do so right now by simply scrolling down and rating them, or hunting down a game that's missing via the search bar below. Games require a minimum of 10 ratings to become eligible, but once that threshold is reached (and if it scores highly enough) it will appear below.

Ready to take a look? Grab yourself a fresh pair of AAs, sit back, and relax as we take you on a tour of the 50 best Game Boy Color games of all time...

Note. In order for games to become eligible, they need a minimum of 10 User Ratings in total.

Black and white brilliance

50. Mr. Driller (GBC)

6.5 Profile

Publisher: Namco / Developer: NamcoRelease Date: 2nd Aug 2000 (USA) / 2nd Aug 2000 (UK/EU)The arcade game shrunk down on a handheld, Namco's simple, addictive gameplay (drill down to destroy blocks piling up beneath your feet) and clean, colourful visuals work very well on the GBC. The home console versions might look prettier, but Mr. Driller felt right at home on Nintendo's portable.

49. Bionic Commando: Elite Forces (GBC)

6.5 Review 7/10 Profile

Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo Software TechnologyRelease Date: 1999 (USA) / 24th Jan 2000 (UK/EU)

Bionic Commando: Elite Forces has some problems — a few dull boss battles, forgettable music and it could use a few more of the well put together sniper sections — but for the most part it's an entertaining, challenging title with enough swinging action to keep you busy for some time. Once cleared it may be a while before you feel the urge to go back to it, but it's a decent entry in Capcom's series and a good choice for people who consider jumping overrated.

48. Pac-Man: Special Color Edition (GBC)

6.6 Profile

Publisher: Namco / Developer: NamcoRelease Date: 1st Aug 1999 (USA) / 1st Aug 1999 (UK/EU)A Pac-Man port for the series' 20th anniversary, Pac-Man: Special Color Edition was most 'special' due to the inclusion of Pac-Attack as an added bonus. Otherwise, it's pretty much just good ol' Pac-Man. Classic.

47. Perfect Dark (GBC)

6.6 Review 6/10 Profile

Publisher: Rare / Developer: RareRelease Date: 28th Aug 2000 (USA) / 24th Jul 2000 (UK/EU)

Rare did a great job on squeezing so many features and technical magic into the little cart, and this GBC rendition of Perfect Dark certainly looks impressive considering the hardware, but this focus on the tech seems to have had an averse effect on the gameplay. It's not a bad game by any stretch, but as a stealthy Metal Gear-alike, it's lacking a little in the 'Fun' department. If you're forgiving of its flaws, you might have a pretty good time with it, but it's far from Perfect.

The non-backlit Game Boy Color screen provides plenty of Dark, mind.

46. Blaster Master: Enemy Below (GBC)

6.6 Review 9/10 Profile

Publisher: Sunsoft / Developer: SunsoftRelease Date: 24th Sep 2000 (USA) / 27th Oct 2000 (UK/EU)Available On: Nintendo Switch Online

The mixture of old and new elements give Blaster Master: Enemy Below enough new twists to make it a worthy sequel to the amazing original. Sure, many of the same audio/visual elements have been carried over fairly unchanged, but the new bosses and open setting offer up a whole new experience for fans to enjoy. If you never gave the Blaster Master series a chance (and Switch owners don't have much excuse considering that both this and the NES original are available with a Nintendo Switch Online subscription), this great Game Boy Color title is as good a reason as any to get stuck in.

45. Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dreams (GBC)

6.7 Review 6/10 Profile

Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Crawfish InteractiveRelease Date: 31st Jan 2000 (USA) / 30th Nov 1998 (UK/EU)

Visually, Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors' Dream it is a big step down from the arcade original — as you'd expect — but this is a fairly good-looking port considering the hardware. Gameplay is the most important thing and luckily it feels like a Street Fighter game despite the occasional irritation of an unintended special move. As a single player experience, this is a decent little fighter that will keep you occupied for quite a while, but some extra modes would have been welcome. Sound effects are straight-up bad and an ending bug also annoys, but the lack of two-player mode is the big disappointment here. If you can't rub a pal's face in it, what's the point?

44. Mega Man Xtreme 2 (GBC)

6.7 Review 7/10 Profile

Publisher: Capcom / Developer: CapcomRelease Date: 30th Oct 2001 (USA) / 8th Feb 2002 (UK/EU)

Mega Man Xtreme 2 is a major improvement in every way over its predecessor. It looks fantastic, plays very well, offers a smooth and varied experience and draws from a whopping four Mega Man X games. This is much closer to the portable X experience that fans were looking for back in 2001, and while screen size, some minor control issues and a few unresolved problems from the first game contribute a bit of a drag factor, it's still an ultimately enjoyable experience.

43. Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone (GBC)

6.7 Profile

Publisher: Electronic Arts / Developer: Griptonite GamesRelease Date: 16th Nov 2001 (USA) / 16th Nov 2001 (UK/EU)Bucking the trend of low quality movie-licensed tie-ins on handheld platforms, Harry Potter and The Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone was a wonderfully solid little RPG and, in our opinion, legitimately in the running for Best Harry Potter game evs — certainly in the top three (not that the series boasts a host of stone cold classics, but still). Its turn-based RPG gameplay fit Harry's spell-filled wizarding world perfectly and it remains one of the best interpretations of the source material in video game form. Flipendo!

42. Crystalis (GBC)

6.7 Profile

Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: SNKRelease Date: 26th Jun 2000 (USA)

Developed by SNK – before it became the fighting game factory of the 1990s – Crystalis made quite an impression on the NES when it was released in 1990, and this Game Boy Color remake – coded by Nintendo Software Technology, no less – is viewed by many fans as a step backwards. Sweeping plot changes are involved, and there's a whole new soundtrack. The visuals are also a little cramped due to the Game Boy Color's smaller display. Even so, it's still one of the best RPGs on Nintendo's handheld, and if you're approaching it having never played the NES original (which is on the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection on Switch, by the way) then you'll find plenty to enjoy.

41. Toki Tori (GBC)

6.7 Review 8/10 Profile

Publisher: Two Tribes / Developer: Two TribesRelease Date: 12th Sep 2001 (USA) / 1st Mar 2002 (UK/EU)

Toki Tori is a game many players probably missed the first time around, though it's easy to catch up with the game these days on Switch. With forty increasingly challenging main stages and several optional hard stages, you're likely be entertained for a good amount of time before reaching the end of the GBC original, and there's something to be said about experiencing this fun puzzle platformer on the system it was originally designed for.

Resident Evil Gaiden didn’t even make the top 50? Who was spamming it with low reviews? There’s no chance it’s worse than a Yu-Gi-Oh and DBZ game.

2PlusUltraMon 31st May 2021

I regret not participating, but am super happy legendary super warriors made the list. Its actually a decent game boy game. To pull off both a turned based and card based system was pretty cool, plus there were tons of characters.

I wish king of fighters was on the list. Glad mario tennis and wario made it.

3abdiasMon 31st May 2021

Pokemon Cristal is better than Gold/Silver by far. The only advantage gold and silver have is that they are playable on Super Game Boy (and DMG Gameboy too)

4

4ObeseChihuahua2Mon 31st May 2021

How did Pokemon Gold and Silver rank about both Pokemon Crystal AND both Zelda Oracle games?!

2

5dimiMon 31st May 2021

Pokemon Crystal and Gold Silver are basically the same game! So yeah Pokemon used to be the very best back then

2

6dartmonkey Mon 31st May 2021

@PlusUltra You can still participate! The list is dynamic and depends on each game's User Rating.

11

7ScreenMon 31st May 2021

Gold/Silver is not better than Crystal.

8TryToBeHopefulMon 31st May 2021

Tetris DX also has a working high score table, OG Tetris' biggest annoyance. Mr Driller, sadly doesn't, which is a reason just to go for Mr Driller 2 on GBA.

9TottMon 31st May 2021

While some will argue the specific ranks, the Zelda games and Pokemon games for me were the absolute best of the GBC library. So seeing Oracles, Link's Awakening, and Gold/ Silver/ Crystal all in the top 10 just makes sense. Ranks will always vary slightly, but the right ones are near the top, for me. Solid list — makes me want to dig out these carts and give em another go.

5

10KingMikeMon 31st May 2021

You say the first Harry Potter is the best, but it ranks lower? As how Pokemon Crystal ranks lower than Gold/Silver.I mean, leaving out Mareep was a huge mistake, but I don't think GS should still be better. Not sure why the two Oracle games have different release dates, but I've learned not to pay too much attention to NL's retro release dates.

11KingMikeMon 31st May 2021

Survival Kids sounds like an idea that was used in a Super Famicom game that has not yet been even fan-translated. Mujintou Monogatari (which I'm guessing means something like Uninhabited Island Story).Sports games with a RPG mode I think has been done only a couple times before. Final Lap Twin for the TurboGrafx had that, as well as the unreleased NES port of the arcade hockey game Hit the Ice (it was released on other consoles, but that RPG mode would've been an NES exclusive feature).

12RalizahMon 31st May 2021

I'm still sour S-E never localized the 3DS Dragon Quest Monsters games.

6

13TheWingedAvengerMon 31st May 2021

@Screen Actually, Gold and Silver ARE better than Crystal. Gold is currently at 1900 dollars an ounce, and silver is at 28 dollars an ounce. An ounce of crystal, on the other hand, is worth a few cents at the most.

3

14kirby2000Mon 31st May 2021

It's not a good sign when the first 15 of the top 50 are full of reviews saying the games are crap. The original Gameboy had way more great games.

1

15SinisterMon 31st May 2021

Pokemon and Zelda in the top 10 was expected but is correct. Those games are endlessly replayable.@KingMike Not having Mareep in Crystal was the biggest flaw of the game.

17PickledKong64Mon 31st May 2021

Genuinely my least favorite Nintendo library.

1

18KrisiMon 31st May 2021

@Screen @ObeseChihuahua2 @abdias Crystal is obviously better, as it's an enhanced version of the other two, but it actually adds just a little more content and was sold as a full-price game. Sure, I grew up with Crystal, and loved it to bits, but look at it this way: when Gold/Silver came out, they were absolutely incredible games, in themselves or compared to the first generation. Then Crystal came out a year later, and it was much less exciting, as it was pretty much the same game with some minor stuff added. The achievements of Crystal are pretty much just the extra stuff, but we can thank everything else we love about gen 2 to G/S.

2

19KrisiMon 31st May 2021

@PickledKong64 What about the Virtual Boy? N64 DD? DSi?

1

20BigBabyPeachMon 31st May 2021

This is a decent list. The only glaring omission for me is Motocross Maniacs 2 - genuinely one of the most addicting games I've ever played.

0

21mauhlin12Mon 31st May 2021

A lot of those Pokemon and Zelda games in the top 10 are also on 3DS VC, probably cheaper to go that route than find the carts on Ebay.

1

22Guitar_bardMon 31st May 2021

I never really got into the GBC back in the day, but when i got my 1st 3ds a few years ago I started to check out a bunch of GBC games on the eshop.

There have been some really awesome games on it, between the Zeldas, Wario Lands, Shantae, etc. I have been really happy to have the ability to play a bunch of them now.

Hey, a reference to Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast! I actually appear in an episode of that show asking a question to one of his guests! It's my very minor claim to fame. Lovely to see a reference to a love of mine in another love of mine

2

26mandlecreedMon 31st May 2021

No Cannon Fodder in the list what now? In all seriousness, the GBC port was fantastic given the hardware it was on.

1

27StrumpanMon 31st May 2021

@TheWingedAvenger depends on what crystal it is.

1

28sdelfinMon 31st May 2021

I was very much into the Neo Geo Pocket when the Game Boy Color was current, so I only played a little bit of GBC here and there. A list like this is a good way to see what's worth checking out if I feel the need. I do remember keeping up with news and reviews then and seeing clever ways developers were using the GBC which is something I always appreciated. Making Street Fighter Alpha work well on the system may be a good example of that. There's not much reason to play that version now other than to see how they dealt with the hardware limits, but the single-player only wouldn't have bothered me. Most of my time with fighting games has been against the CPU and, despite what most people say, I've always found that to be quite fun.

I have been reluctant to try the Wario Land sequels. The shift toward puzzle platforming sounds less appealing to me. I was a big fan of the original Wario Land on the original Game Boy. I last played it about six months ago and had a great time still. I'll have to read more about the follow ups. Hearing that Zelda Oracle of Seasons is combat heavy and straightforward sounds like my style. I've been meaning to dive into all the old Zeldas I missed and a few I haven't played in a long time but did enjoy. As for Metal Gear Solid, I really like how they shrunk the game down. It looks good and plays well. As with most things MGS, I found the dialogue parts far too wordy, and I didn't love the stage design as much. I would have preferred more emphasis on stealth and combat and less on exploring and looking for items. But the game is what it is. The VR missions are closer to what I enjoy. I'm glad I played it though.

29Sisilly_GTue 1st Jun 2021

I think it's stupid to give separate ranks for Gold, Silver, and Crystal, as they're all virtually the same game (with Crystal being a glorified deluxe version).

But the Gen II Pokémon games are my absolute favourites in the series, perhaps followed closely by the excellent Gen V games (which I would love to play again, but couldn't bear to write over my save data!).

I absolutely love GB and GBC games though, and I would throw myself at compilations of the library's very best.

0

30HarmonieTue 1st Jun 2021

Not to get too pedantic, but Pokemon Gold/Silver are actually Gameboy games that can be played in color on the GBC. So they're kinda hybridish? Not sure it's a big deal, but they are technically GB games.Pokemon Crystal is the one that is GBC exclusive.

0

31BulbasaurusRexTue 1st Jun 2021

@Harmonie A bunch of the games on this list are the same way, but they're still advertised as GBC games on their boxes. It would be a truly pathetic list if they stuck solely to the relatively small amount of GBC exclusives.

1

32HalBailmanTue 1st Jun 2021

I've played NONE of these games. I actually didn't get a Gameboy until quite late, and never a GBC. I was content with the NES and saw the Gameboy as something for kids. My mom, who bought the NES for me one Christmas, was the one to buy me a transparent Gameboy complete with Space Invaders & Galaxians in the box. I would have bought about 5 more games for it myself over time.

0

33AsakiTue 1st Jun 2021

DON'T WORRY, GUYS, CRYSTAL IS BEATING GOLD & SILVER NOWI can't believe Harvest Moon outranks Harvest Moon 3.I feel like the Dragon Warrior games would rank a lot higher if more than 40 people had played them. I, II, and III on GBC are the sole reasons that I never played Gold/Silver when they came out.

2

34SPL64Tue 1st Jun 2021

Very good list! But I thinking will be counting only GBC exclusive titles.Fun fact: the first dedicated cartridge to the system is Top Gear Pocket.

1

35TheWingedAvengerTue 1st Jun 2021

@Strumpan Hey, this is a G-rated website! You mustn't talk about crystal m___.

0

36NerdyBoutKirbyTue 1st Jun 2021

Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong and Dixie Kong should be included, but it's not catalogued on Nintendo Life. A definite 9/10.

0

37FargusPelagiusTue 1st Jun 2021

Good to see MGS at 4, it is certainly my number one as i have never been a fan of Pokemon at all. Links Awakening was brilliant too, but i always consider that a GB game as that is my first fond memory of that game.

0

38TryToBeHopefulTue 1st Jun 2021

@MajorasLapdog we stopped listening after he called my wife a bitch (as a joke). We've just about forgiven him however many years later. I used to feature on the Edinburgh Fringe podcasts a lot.

@NerdyBoutKirby Is it not just (basically) Japanese 'Donkey Kong Land III'?

0

40MajorasLapdogTue 1st Jun 2021

@TryToBeHopeful oof that’s rough. His humour does come across as mean-spirited and bitter sometimes and I can’t imagine he’s a particularly pleasant bloke. His podcasts are always amusing though, the emergency questions spruce things up and his guest list is basically unparalleled (except for maybe Adam Buxton’s) if you want to hear some candid conversations with some of Britain’s biggest names in comedy. While we’re on the topic of podcasts (and decidedly not on actual topic), everybody should check out Athletico Mince. Not many podcasts have me grinning ear to ear so consistently

Weird that neither of the Spider-Man games cracked top 50.

0

42HarmonieTue 1st Jun 2021

@BulbasaurusRex I see. TBH, I didn't have too many GB or GBC games, so I wasn't aware of other GB games that played in color on the GBC.

43PickledKong64Tue 1st Jun 2021

@Krisi do those really count tho?

55WaffleRaptor01Sat 21st Oct 2023

I might be the only one who thinks Link's Awakening sad story is exaggerated.

I keep hearing fans talk about how you form a connection it's with characters only to be heartbroken in the end.

I'm not knocking the gameplay. That part is stellar, but I do question if alot of this supposed deep story stem from outside influences, because I found none of it in the game.

Link is a mute, you interact with the inhabits for no more than a few seconds, and the supposed closed bond you form with Marin seems questionable. There is virtually no character development, from start to finish. You just meet a cast of quirky individuals and then done.

You meet her a couple of times, she tells you about wanting to be reborn a bird, and then you're gone. You don't remotely spend enough time with the cast of characters to form any sort of believable bond.

The ending asks you to feel sad, but the game doesn't immersive you enough in it's world to feel sad at all. The remake, which had a chance to do that, doesn't.

That's why I wonder if some of that supposed deepness comes from outside factors, than from the actual game itself.

Only really liked the wario games, really good.

0

57RappinRootbeerSat 21st Oct 2023

I will die on the hill that the Oracle games are overrated, bottom-tier Zelda and not very good.

1

58Quiet2downSat 21st Oct 2023

@RappinRootbeer They are still fun, but the best way I can explain this is, they feel fragmented. After reading up on how the supposed original idea was 3 games, it looks Capcom might have had this huge idea, but due to issues, just scrapped the supposed 3rd game and split in between the current two.As, the article sates Oracle of Seasons has a barebones story, while Ages doesn't. However, playing the latter first, enhances the former. My belief is due to the original idea failing, Capcom couldn't make this quite complete epic trilogy they wanted. As a result, some of the story ideas had to be scrapped because of limitations.

0

59sketchturnerSat 21st Oct 2023

I'm happy with the 3 Zeldas at the top, and I'm glad Wario 2 is as well, but Survival Kids should 100% be in the top 5. Phenomenal game. For me it would be #2 after Link's Awakening.

0

60PaulBizkitSat 21st Oct 2023

It's too bad that fan-translated games never make it to these lists, because Star Ocean Blue Sphere is an amazing action rpg with one of the best sprite works on the console (if we take out non-action games like the sakura taisen ones), the second Pokemon TCG game and Samurai Kid, all really good games.

3

61John_DeaconSat 21st Oct 2023

When Link's Awakening, which will be in my best games ever list, is your competitor, it's really hard to win, but my favorite GBC game is Ganbare Goemon - Hoshizorashi Dynamites Arawaru!! It's got a lot of elements which make gameplay really fun both for your first play or replays (excellent 8-bit 2d platforming, nice bosses with great diversity, a nice overworld map that allows you to go back to previous stages to get items, towns to visit, shops where you can buy upgrades and other items). I really recommend it!

It was never released out of Japan, but there's little text and it won't be a problem for you

1

62__jamiieSat 21st Oct 2023

It seems so bizarre to me now that there would be a 3 year gap between hardware being released in Japan and Europe.

2

63SpeedRunRocksSat 21st Oct 2023

Metal Gear destroys every other title not named Zelda. It's sooooo good! Still worth the $100+ for a loose cartridge.

0

64defrbSat 21st Oct 2023

Very good list, i couldn't agree more.

0

65zawa113Sat 21st Oct 2023

I quite enjoyed Magi Nation, wish more people would give it a chance (it's based on a card game, but I had no problem with zero knowledge of this before hand, it just came off as more of a really good Pokemon knockoff with hilarious dialogue)

1

If you're into modding you should play Mega Man 5 World. It's a Gameboy Color mod of Mega Man 5 and it's excellent!!

The Game Boy Color was my first handheld ever. Cheers to 25 years!

@dartmonkey Actually only Europe got both versions of Pocket Bomberman. Japan only got the monochrome version and North America only got the color version.

I don't know if it's telling of the Game Boy Color's short history that the game rated the best is an incremental upgrade of a previously available game.

0

71__jamiieSun 22nd Oct 2023

@KingMike But the Game Boy Color itself was an incremental upgrade of a previously available console.

I was more of a GBA man in the GB era of consoles. I did have a cousins hand me down, second hand GBC though which I enjoyed a number of their games, and a handful of additional, self bought ones. Links Awakening DX was superb and "signature game" of the console for me. Loved Pokemon Pinball, Tetris DX, Mario Golf and Tennis, Pokemon Crystal, Metal GS. Ah good times.

Of the games listed, I've owned:

-Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories

-Game & Watch Gallery 2

-Pokémon Pinball

-Pokémon Trading Card Game

-Super Mario Bros. Deluxe

-Pokémon Gold

-The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

-The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons

The definitive version of Link’s Awakening is still the monochrome original. It is very well designed, very atmospheric and just perfect in every way.

The remake and the game boy color port are nice too, but I will always recommend the original one over those, due to the garish colors and overpowered items available in the GBC port and the fact that the remake is an entirely different game.

GBC memories

by Gavin Lane Mon 1st Jan 2024

Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo LifeIt's now 25 years since Game Boy Color launched, and for many of us in the West, it was on this system that we first caught and traded Pocket Monsters with pals back in 1998.

Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life

Backwards compatible with the entire Game Boy library, the Game Boy Color refined the DMG and the smaller Game Boy Pocket with its sharp little colour screen and contoured body that felt even more comfortable in your hands and your pockets. It wasn't backlit, so there was still room for improvement, but in addition to the colour on the screen, a range of snazzy case colours (which matched the five colours of the COLOR in the system’s logo) reinforced the idea that the GBC was, in fact, the idealised, final expression of the 8-bit system that launched nine years prior.

Is the GBC its own console or part of the OG Game Boy 'family'? Nintendo lumps its exclusive colour titles together with the monochrome library in the Nintendo Switch Online app, but it had plenty of its own exclusives. (There’s a poll at the bottom of the page, so let us know where you fall on this generational divide!)

Ultimately, it doesn't matter if you consider the GBC its own system or not — it's part of a lineage of portable perfection and lovely little thing. In honour of the occasion, here, a handful of us on Team Nintendo Life look back fondly on a console that, for so many gamers, opened a door to a whole world of portable Nintendo goodness...

Ollie Reynolds, staff writer

Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life

I distinctly remember getting my Game Boy Color on Christmas Day back in 1999. Pokémon Blue had launched just a few months earlier in the UK and I was already totally enamoured with the TV series at this point, so my excitement was through the roof.

Those early days were some of the best of my gaming life. For one, the Game Boy Color was the first piece of hardware that I could wholly call my own; up until that point, anything I’d played either belonged to my older brother or had been passed down when he upgraded to the next big thing.

Naturally, then, I carried my Game Boy Color everywhere and sunk absurd amounts of hours into Pokémon. I was in love with the franchise at this point, and I remember my friends and I would link up during our lunch breaks at school and trade Pokémon. To this day, it’s still the only Pokémon game that I’ve managed to 100% complete, and it’s honestly not even close.

One thing that makes me chuckle to this day, however, is that I used to think the console’s batteries were running out whenever my Pokémon got poisoned in battle. I didn’t realise that the flickering screen was linked to the status change and I honestly thought the handheld was simply struggling to keep its lights on. Please tell me I’m not the only one to make this mistake!

Alana Hagues, deputy editor

I don't have anything earth-shattering to say about the Game Boy Color. It was the first console I could really call "my own" — lime-green coloured, so it stood out next to all the other home consoles I had to share with my brother. But the GBC? It was mine.

Like any kid in the late '90s, it was all Pokémon. I took my GBC to school, and I managed to grab a link cable and trade Pokémon with my friends — though we definitely got into trouble for trying to do it between classes. Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite!, Super Mario Land, Mario Golf, and Pokémon Pinball became my companions for sneaky late nights and distracted weekend mornings, but mainline Pokémon was my true obsession.

Pokémon Yellow was my very first RPG as a result. It taught me about the strategy of turn-based battles and the fun of exploration — and Pokémon Silver only expanded upon that a few years later. I became a Pokémaniac before an RPG friend, though, and that meant I desperately wanted one of those Yellow GBCs.

Alas, it never came to be... — Image: Damien McFerran / Nintendo Life

The unique colours of each console, and the limited edition, made me grow a real appreciation for unique hardware designs. My eyes always light up at interesting console colours as a result of the GBC, and even if there's a collaboration I'm not interested in, I'll always take time to admire the variations in a console.

Like much of my childhood, however, my GBC is no longer part of my small collection, but I have to wonder how different my tastes would be had I not played Pokémon Yellow all those years ago. It's the reason I love playing games while wrapped up in a blanket, whatever the weather.

Kate Gray, contributor

I had the Atomic Purple GBC, like all the cool kids did. It was largely a Tetris-in-the-car machine — I still get goosebumps whenever I see a rocket taking off — but I slowly amassed a collection of surprisingly good movie adaptations, too, like the Toy Story Racer game that Traveller's Tales made, or the Harry Potter game that cemented itself in my nostalgia gland like something I should probably see the doctor about.

Here's a fun little anecdote for you, though: I accidentally Pavlov'd myself into needing to pee whenever I play games in the car, and it's all thanks to the Game Boy Color. Some neuron connection in my brain managed to link "video games in the car" with "I really need to pee," because, well, as a kid, those are the two things that you do in the car, and ever since then, I can't play ANYTHING in the car without my brain going "OOOH, OOH, I KNOW THIS ONE." No DS, no 3DS, no Switch. You'd think the increased graphical fidelity would bamboozle my brain out of recognising it as "video games," but no.

Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life

Sadly, I don't have my GBC anymore, and I don't actually know why. Did I trade it in for my Game Boy SP, which I also don't have anymore (it was the silver one)? Did I leave it behind at a grandparent's house? Did I drop it in the ocean, like Rose at the end of Titanic? I guess we'll never find out. RIP, little GBC.

Gavin Lane, editor

The Game Boy Color was my first Game Boy — the machine on which I played Pokémon, Link's Awakening, and Super Mario Land 2. Yep, I never had to contend with the DMG's blurry screen back in the day.

One of my fondest memories is playing, of all things, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe — more specifically, looking at the extra modes and applications in that particular port. With the calendar, you were able to skip years ahead and discern what day of the week, say, 21st October 2023 was going to be. Amazing!... Okay, perhaps not amazing, but in those nascent days of the internet when you couldn't just ask Siri what day it would be a thousand years from now, that little function on the SMB GBC port felt like magical prognostication.

I've still got my original Teal system, and it's in sparkling nick, too. Obviously, my OG console has a special place in my heart, but last year a gift from fellow Nintendo Lifer Liam Doolan had me reevaluating things. He very generously sent me an Ozzie! Ozzie! Ozzie! variant from his Australian homeland, and it's a thing of beauty!

Images: Gavin Lane / Nintendo Life

I've got half a mind to mod it with a new backlit screen, but I'm also hesitant to crack into such a relatively rare console. Maybe I should give my Teal the treatment?

Ah, we love you GBC. Let us know your Game Boy Color memories and favourite games in the comments, and let us know where you stand on it being part of the Game Boy 'family' of systems in this poll...

Is the Game Boy Color its own console, or just a snazzy SKU for the OG Game Boy?

It’s absolutely its own console!

It's definitely not its own console!

I have no nostalgia for it. My first Nintendo product was the GBA. For those of you who did grow up with GBC, it must have been one heck of an experience when Advance launched.

Fond memories. For me, Pokemon Pinball, with its rumble pak, stands out in particular.

Great article. Having started at the OG Gameboy, the Color was a revelation. Very fond memories of playing both old and new games on that machine. I think I had a transparent purple one… was that a thing? Like so many childhood toy stuffs those old systems are gone with the wind…

4LadyCharlieSat 21st Oct 2023

@Vexx234 I was in middle school when the Game Boy Color dropped, and it was relevatory! It was so amazing to see Game Boy games in color, and to be able to add color to old games. The GBA was a game changer, for sure. But for the 3 years in between, the GBC was magical.

25 years!!? I really need time to slow down please

6StarryCielSat 21st Oct 2023

The GBC is one of my favorite handhelds, I just love how pretty much every first-party game in its library has something really cool going for it. Wario Land 3 and Pokemon's day-night cycles, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge and Game & Watch Gallery 3 hiding unreleased games as secrets or unlockables, Super Mario Bros Deluxe's laundry list of bonus content, Pokemon GSC's postgame, the linked Oracle Zeldas, Hamtaro giving its protagonist 86 unique context-sensitive animations, Tilt & Tumble's motion controls, and the JP-only Mobile Golf having actual online support and DLC. I didn't even mention Link's Awakening DX, Game & Watch Gallery 2, Wario Land 2, Tetris DX, Pokemon Trading Card Game, and the Mario Tennis & Golf games. It's one of Nintendo's most consistently strong first-party lineups despite how small it is.

I have put my original yellow one In a box frame with a copy of Pokemon yellow and a Pikachu card.

8MooseTinselSat 21st Oct 2023

I loved this system, I apparently even played it when i was little so it's kinda fate that I do lolI'll also love how they used the same name worldwide

9DasWunderkindSat 21st Oct 2023

I collected and recycled aluminum cans for 3 months when I was 14 years old because I really wanted one. I got the lime green one and had Link's Awakening DX, Tetris, Batman, SML1 & 2. When the Pokemon cartoon hit a friend of mine at school lent me his copy of red and said I could return it whenever.

I caught a Mew and evolved it, then did the missingno bug to get 99 everything it made the game so much more fun. But after that I just lost interest in the series. Despite buying a GBA when it launched the console never really did much for me, and the new Pokemon designs just looked deritive and cheesy. By this point I was in college and had moved on to the Dreamcast with its awesome arcade library. I miss the GBC days and still play GB games on my backlit rg351p.

3

10KingMikeSat 21st Oct 2023

I got my Game Boy Color as a birthday gift in 2000, along with a copy of Dragon Warrior I+II.DQ2 was a tough game, so I ended up not actually finishing it until the end of the decade.Though I previously, and still own, my green case OG Game Boy as well.

2

11Vexx234Sat 21st Oct 2023

@LadyCharlie Sounds like a happy time spent growing up. Though if you were in middle school, that means I was just a tad bit younger. Back then I was a Lego Fanatic. Seeing the shift from black and white, to color, to even more detail, must've made your eyes burn from staring at the screen too long.

@StarryCiel Wario Land 3 was my first, first party Nintendo game. He became one of my favorite characters of all time. Wario is the kind of guy who's willing to save the day... If gold is involved.

12TheMenaceToSocietySat 21st Oct 2023

I may have only just gotten an Atomic Purple Game Boy Color a couple months ago, but I’m ready to build up my game library for it. And replace the (naturally) broken speaker.

2

13Ryu_NiiyamaSat 21st Oct 2023

Still have mine. Was essentially a Pokémon machine but yep still works just fine.

3

GBC was the first real upgrade for the Game Boy line. Lots of good memories with that system, the golden age of Game Boy IMO.

3

Happy 25th anniversary GBC! This was my very first Nintendo handheld system, ahh the memories.

2

16AndroidiOSSat 21st Oct 2023

I have no nostalgia for the GBC.I had one for about three months as I traded it in for GBA games.Game-wise, I like Super Mario Bros. DX, Tetris DX and Blade.

0

17HexagonSunSat 21st Oct 2023

My first portable was the DMG in '89, so I was a young adult when I picked up the Gameboy Color. I remember playing a lot of Wario Land, Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and Dragon Quest. Great little system. My biggest memory with all the Gameboys before the SP was finding that perfect spot near a lamp that illuminated the game without causing glare. Nostalgic to recall, but I'm glad those days are over. I have back light modded Gameboy systems, a Super Gameboy and a Gameboy Player for replaying those games now.

4

18betterthanvegasSat 21st Oct 2023

Love the GBC. My first handheld was the original Game Boy so the idea of color in my games on the go was unbelievable. It took me 10 months to save up enough to buy one. I now have the Pokemon GBC from the pic above with an IPS screen and fresh speaker. It's wonderful and the games have never looked better (yes, they're still old and pretty blocky.) Now if I could just find a copy of Crystal locally I'd be set

4

19DpullamSat 21st Oct 2023

I had a Game Boy Color when I was a kid, I believe it was a turquoise colored one. I didn't have it very long though, because I recieved it as a gift around the time that the Game Boy Advance came out, so I was very quickly upgraded to the Game Boy Advance. I still have fun memories of the short time that I had one though.

3

20PauloSat 21st Oct 2023

I voted it's absolutely its own thing because of the exclusive titles that could not be played on the old GB (clear carts) and also because many other titles run better on the GBC, despite being compatible with the older models (black carts such as Ghosts'n Goblins). Also, the plethora of titles released in such short period. But, alas, I don't think the GBC has aged as well as the GBA.

0

21LightsiydSat 21st Oct 2023

My first Nintendo console was a black Game Boy Advance SP, which was where I first came across the mindblowing Metroid Fusion and Yoshi's Island, along with Crash Nitro Kart and Dragonball Z Supersonic Warriors. Good times.❤️

I did manage to play the occasional GBC and GBA from a few friends before that though.

3

22dimiSat 21st Oct 2023

I lost my original one and all my cartridges...(mom must throw it out something). Got a modded GBC with IPS v.2 now though, so. great. I don't FOMO not having Analogue Pocket, just a little

3

23AndyMcDonaldSat 21st Oct 2023

I started with the original big, grey, clunky Game Boy but I later got the yellow Pikachu GBC for free - it was in the lost and found of a pub where my dad was friendly with the barman and he kindly gave it to me. I loved how the power light was Pikachu's cheek.Great games in the Game Boy catalogue though - the amount of hours (and batteries) I must have sank into the first two Pokemon gens, the Mario Land series, Wario Land 2, Pocket Bomberman... Can't remember which others I had but very happy times!

3

24JJtheTexanSat 21st Oct 2023

I still have my original Atomic Purple Game Boy Color, a Christmas gift in 1998! I was a college student at the time.I didn't get many GBC-exclusive games for it, but it really did give new life to my existing Game Boy library. My favorite GBC game is still The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, though I really do love launch title Tetris DX. I'd love to see it come to Nintendo Switch Online...

3

25SpoonySpoonsSat 21st Oct 2023

I’ve got a lot of nostalgia for it, but only because of 3DS VC and a jailbroken iphone back in 2013. I spent a ton of time playing Links Awakening DX and Metroid II during the holidays that year.

2

26DualmaskSat 21st Oct 2023

My first handheld was the OG Game Boy, and I have a great deal of nostalgia for that, but I didn't spend a ton of time on the Color specifically. I think I only played a couple of games on it, Link's Awakening DX and Pokemon Red. Someone had stolen my original Game Boy and most of the games so it was kind of a tough time until I moved onto Game Boy Advance.

2

27PoodlestargenericaSat 21st Oct 2023

The Gbc had a better processor and color, and was such a huge step up from the pocket that it's laughable.

1

28IceEarthGuardSat 21st Oct 2023

Don't have any memories for the Gameboy colour handheld console. Only the Gameboy SP because I played all my GB games on there. Did play the OG one a bit, but went back to the SP.

0

29MeatSauceSat 21st Oct 2023

GBC was my 1st Gameboy. I never had any interest in the original gameboy as a child it was rare we got many games so I didn’t want to waste an opportunity to get a new console game over a subpar handheld one.In late 98 I was getting way more games. I got a n64 in october and my parents promised to get me ocarina of time for christmas. They forgot to preorder and couldn’t find it for christmas. As a make good my mom bought me a gbc with link’s awakening and that thing went everywhere with me.

2

30Magic_Salmon_ProSat 21st Oct 2023

I really should hurry up finishing the GBC port of Super Dinoblasters and get it out this year for the 25th anniversary!

1

31Magic_Salmon_ProSat 21st Oct 2023

@LikeWhoa "caught a mew and evolved it" surely I'm not the only one reading this thinking what on earth did you evolve the mew into?

4

32TyranexxSat 21st Oct 2023

My silver Special Pikachu Edition GBC was gifted to me for my 10th birthday; any Pokemon fan knows how symbolic this age is. Along with Pokemon Gold, I also received Tweety's High-Flying Adventure (not a bad platformer overall) and Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers (A loose retelling of the classic Jekyll/Hyde episode from the original series). Those three were there in the beginning, though I obtained other games over time - including most of the other Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon games. Others were borrowed. Some I did miss out on and didn't get to play until the merciful 3DS VC a decade ago.I still own my old GBC, and it does function. It has some battle scars from being dragged almost everywhere by a Pokemon-obsessed kid, and up/down on the directional pad have input delays. Most importantly, it was the first video game system I could call my own. Before that point, any gaming I did was on systems at my aunt's or at another babysitter, or the PC games available at school. This wasn't the system that started my love for Nintendo, but it certainly helped cement it!

2

33dustinprewittSat 21st Oct 2023

Ive always thought of it as the Pokemon console. Just a bit of a novelty made to play a novelty game series. of course, I wasnt aware of the game boy advance being on the horizon, so in retrospect, it feels like a bit of a stopgap

1

34sdelfinSun 22nd Oct 2023

I voted " Pffidunno shrugs ". It was kind of its own thing, but also not. I remember when it came out, it seemed like it was just a modest upgrade. It certainly wasn't the leap you'd expect from a next-generation device. That would come with the GBA. I wasn't into the Game Boy platform by the late 1990s. I was playing Neo Geo Pocket when the GBC came out and was very happy with that. But I remember the GBC made the Game Boy scene more interesting as I liked to read reviews to see what developers were doing as there were a number of examples of clever uses of the hardware. I've always had an appreciation for when developers found interesting uses for limited hardware or somehow managed something that was unexpected.

I think each version is a new console. Just like the OLED is a special version of the Switch.

@Vexx234

It was. I had a GBC (before that I was a Game Gear kid) and when the GBA came out it blew my mind. I got one on day one with Super Mario Advance. It was Glacier.

Playing Pokémon Blue on my GBC was my early childhood.

Considering the number of exclusive games for it - it's definitely not the same situation as the New 3DS - I'd confidently say the Game Boy Color was its own console but regardless, thank you Game Boy Color for letting me play those and also Game Boy games (like Gavin we've never had the original at home)!By the way, just like Ollie and Alana the GBC was the first system I eventually didn't have to share with my siblings as a kid since our parents got my sister a red one and later a yellow Pikachu one for me!

@AndyMcDonald In a strange coincidence, that's very similar to how I got the original DMG Game Boy. It was left behind at a restaurant that my grandfather ran and it was never claimed. It's how I've got an original Game Boy but have never owned Tetris, as Super Mario Land was in the slot.

@sdelfin I don't think I ever had Tetris either so I'm in that minority too! I seem to recall getting the Game Boy with a carry case and maybe Super Mario Land with it. The GB Mario games were endearingly odd.

It's the same device just updated. Nintendo does this with it's handhelds so they can sell more units without having to create a completely new device. Sega had a device that had a backlight and color. Nintendo releases a device for each. I had the light so I could play after my mother told me to turn off the lights and go to bed.lol

it felt very old already at realese and i never bought one. 8 years after the Game gear, we got a new system with inferior graphics and still no back light, that was just tragic. After the realese of the GBA SP 101 model in 2005, when Nintendo finally made a decent screan, i have played a lot of GBC games.

I just saw this as an upgrade and despite there being a few games that were exclusive I never considered it worth it. I just carried on playing the grey brick until the advance and I never felt I missed anything. I seem to remember there was already rumours about the advance when this released too. That really added to the feeling that this was just a quick upgrade to slightly extend the shelf live of the game boy rather than being the next real Nintendo console.

It’s not its own console. It’s basically a Gameboy Pro.

Best Game Boy Color Games of All TimeMore than just a transitional handheld console until the Game Boy Advance arrived, the Game Boy Color was home to some of Nintendo's most vibrant titles during its short run.By

The Game Boy was a benchmark moment for Nintendo, as the Japanese company proved it was possible to deliver quality gaming in a handheld package. Yes, Nintendo had already released a wide variety of Game & Watch devices, but the Game Boy featured swappable cartridges to make it feel like a home console in the palms of your hands. As the 1990s were drawing to a close, it was time for an update and Nintendo delivered what would become a trademark feature in its handheld department: an iterative but well-received boost of its current hardware. The Game Boy Color made its debut in 1998 in Japan, and brought with it a fancier screen, a staggering number of colors for the time, and a punchy sound from its speaker.More Nintendo best listsBest SNES GamesBest Game Boy GamesBest N64 GamesBest GameCube GamesBest Wii GamesThis handheld also allowed for a more colorful selection of games, each one using the LCD screen to its maximum potential to deliver vibrant images and gameplay. While Nintendo hadn't kept the news of the Game Boy Advance a secret, the GBC was more than just a transitional device until the next generation of handheld gaming arrived. It was mobile Mayfly with a short lifespan on the market, but one that still saw some of Nintendo's best games released on it. We've rounded up the 10 best Game Boy Color games in alphabetical order.Best Game Boy Color gamesThe Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DXThe Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DXThe original Link's Awakening was a curious departure from the structures established in previous Legend of Zelda games. No Hyrule to explore, no Triforce relic to collect or even the titular Zelda herself, the Game Boy title was still a critically acclaimed experience when it was released in 1993. Fast forward to 1998, and looking to promote the Game Boy Color, Nintendo released the DX version of the game. Not to be confused with the iconic WWE alliance of Triple H and Shawn Michaels, the DX edition of Link's Awakening enhanced the game with fully colorized graphics, unique enemies, a unique dungeon, and color-based puzzles. There was even a photography element present, allowing for a dozen snaps to be taken and printed out using the Game Boy Printer. The end result was a treat, as one of the best Zelda games was now even better, and over a decade later, this version was re-released on the Nintendo 3DS for its virtual console.2019 would see a full remake of the legendary title for the Nintendo Switch, which riffed on the original with a gorgeous retro-modern art style. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of SeasonsThe Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Oracle of SeasonsZelda mania was still running wild in the early 2000s, and hot off the release of the genre-defining Ocarina of Time and its underrated follow-up Majora's Mask, came this quirky adventure on the Game Boy Color. Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons took an unusual approach to the Zelda formula, with each one focusing on a specific theme and gameplay ideas. Oracle of Seasons was Zelda with the action dialed up to 11, while Oracle of Ages focused more on the trademark puzzles of the franchise.Either game was brilliant in action and animated with quirky pixel perfection on the Game Boy Color, but owning both would reveal some real magic under the Nintendo hood. Using a password system, both games could communicate with each other and help create a more complete experience. Finish the one game, and you'd get a password which could be used on the partner title to drastically change the journey and replace the Veran and Onox boss fight with a classic showdown against Ganon. There hasn't been another Zelda adventure like the Oracle games, but this pair of colorful siblings gave the Game Boy Color a terrific send-off just as the Game Boy Advance was preparing to hit the market.Mario GolfMario GolfGolf on the go, and you didn't even need to pay membership fees or risk your access being revoked if you weren't properly dressed, Mario Golf is one of those titles that perfectly showed off what the Game Boy Color was capable of with its eye-catching colors, pick-up-and-play mentality, and tons of extras loaded into the cart memory. Whether you were teeing off for a hole-in-one or measuring for a precise putt, Mario Golf was easily the best handheld golf game at the time. It was even better with the N64 connectivity that could give more established franchises a run for their money back then.Mario TennisMario TennisServing up some more Mario-themed sports action on the Game Boy Color, Mario Tennis was notable for how sparingly it used its cast of Mushroom kingdom citizens. While Mario and friends would appear in Exhibition mode and as the final challengers in this tennis showdown, the focus was more on growing your rookie sensation and investing ability points in their growth. The idea worked splendidly, and if you were attached to your tennis hero, you could even transfer them over to the N64 version of Mario Tennis for a more three-dimensional debut on the court.Metal Gear SolidMetal Gear SolidMetal Gear Solid on PlayStation was one of the defining games of its time for good reason. Metal Gear Solid on the Game Boy Color though? This port was a surprisingly faithful handheld version of what made the 1998 game so successful, only stripped down to its classic roots so that it could work on the Game Boy Color. A perfect example of how a spin-off can and should strive to provide the same level of entertainment as the original title. The Game Boy Color version of Metal Gear Solid succeeded at providing a quality handheld spin-off experience, throwing an alternate timeline Snake back into action against an Outer Heaven separatist group, each operative having their own specialty and a ludicrous codename that only this series could get away with. Not just a fun game to practice stealth and espionage tactics inside of, this version of Metal Gear Solid had an impressive story and plenty of bonus VR mission content to experiment with once the end credits had rolled. All that, on a single cartridge.Pokemon Gold / Silver/ CrystalPokemon GoldSince Pokemon Gold and Silver are our picks for the best Pokemon game, it's no surprise they've found their way onto this list. The sophomore effort from developer Game Freak amplified the catch 'em all nature of Pokemon Red and Blue on the Game Boy while adding dozens of new pocket monsters to a world that was simply popping with vibrant color. The Johto region was a joy to explore, the new Pokemon were an eclectic mix of imaginative new designs, and once the Elite Four had been beaten, the scope of Pokemon Gold and Silver expanded massively with a return to the Kanto region of the previous generation.Pokemon Gold and Silver was unmatched value for the money that delivered more than just a mere iterative sequel, greatly building on its mechanics and delivering a title that was more ambitious than ever before. The first generation of Pokemon games established a foundational template for all the games that would follow in its footsteps, but Pokemon's second-generation established a high benchmark for what future sequels could aspire to be like.Pokemon Crystal upped the ante, providing the perfect combination of Gold and Silver highlights with revolutionary animations for each pocket monster and a story more focused on the legendary hound Suicune. No matter which version you got though, this was the definitive Pokemon game of the Game Boy era. The games were later remade for Nintendo DS as Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver.Pokemon Trading Card GamePokemon Trading Card GameIn an age before Pokemon cards became a viable currency or an opulent sign of wealth that adorned the necks of YouTubers, Pokemon fever saw its collectible card game spin-off reach the Game Boy Color. The core idea of the TCG was there, as players could battle each other with the original 151 Pokemon, but it was all wrapped up in an adventure that rivaled the original Game Boy games and even outclassed them in certain departments.Developer HudsonSoft was given the job of adapting the TCG into a sprawling RPG, and the studio delivered one of the best games on the Game Boy Color with a streamlined and accessible approach to the tabletop gaming phenomenon. Battling club leaders, collecting cards, and basking in the crisp visuals made for a memorable experience--as well as a thoroughly engrossing one that was hard to put down. If there was a battery shortage in 2000, you can probably blame Pokemon Trading Card Game for its addictive one-more-turn gameplay.Super Mario Bros. DeluxeSuper Mario Bros. DeluxePorting the original Super Mario Bros. games over to the Game Boy Color and calling it a day while the nostalgia-fueled cash rolled in could have easily been done, but Nintendo took a different path with Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. More than a decade old by the time it was released on its handheld console, Nintendo filled this version of its bestselling game with tons of new content that made the entire game feel like a brand-new experience to play.Familiar territory with a a bunch of new twists, this vibrant return of Nintendo's favorite plumbers felt like a deluxe reminder of the duo's timeless adventures from the NES days.Tetris DXTetris DXTetris is as close as you can get to perfection, thanks to its timeless design, easy to learn mechanics, and the challenge of mastering it at its highest levels. The Game Boy's stroke of genius when it first launched was to include a copy of Tetris, and for the Game Boy Color, an enhanced version of Tetris was inevitable. Tetris DX was its name, and inside of its cart was a number of improvements to the stack 'em and clear 'em block-busting action of the original game. Two new gameplay modes had been added, a profile feature for save-games was present, and the game looked fantastic bright colors that made each tetromino pop. Familiar but improved, Tetris DX was another Game Boy classic in this incarnation.Wario Land 3Wario Land 3Powering up your character through exploration was an old idea by the time that Wario Land III came along, but Nintendo's unkillable bruiser found a way to make these classic concepts with a fresh new energy. Fantastically animated and packed with quirky music, each level in this game was a uniquely fun time within the game, each one building on its various elements to unlock more hidden secrets when revisited in this cult classic sequel.GameSpot Best Lists and Recommendations The Best Nintendo Switch Games The Best Xbox Series X Games To Play Right Now The Best PS5 Games So Far + Show More GameSpot Best Lists and Recommendations Links (1) The Best PC Games To Play Right Now
